Website vs. Custom Web App: Which Does Your Business Actually Need?

Vektron Automation · 5 min read

"Can you build us something online" is where most of these conversations start — and the honest answer depends entirely on what that "something" needs to do. A website and a custom web app look similar from the outside but solve completely different problems, take different amounts of time, and cost very different amounts. Here's a simple way to tell which one you actually need.

A website: for telling people who you are

A website's job is to present information and convert visitors into enquiries — who you are, what you offer, why to trust you, and how to get in touch. It's largely the same experience for every visitor. Think landing pages, business sites, portfolios and most e-commerce storefronts. It's faster to build, cheaper to maintain, and it's the right starting point for the vast majority of businesses.

A web app: for letting people do something

A web app's job is to let users log in, store their own data and perform actions that change based on who they are — booking a slot, tracking an order, managing a dashboard, submitting a form that triggers a workflow. It behaves differently for every user and usually needs a database, user accounts and real backend logic behind it. That makes it slower and more expensive to build than a website, but it's the only option when "showing information" isn't enough.

A quick way to tell them apart

Ask one question: does every visitor need to see the exact same thing, or does the experience change based on who's logged in and what they've done before? If it's the same for everyone, you need a website. If it's personalized, stateful or involves users acting on their own data, you need a web app.

Most businesses need both, just not at the same time

A common (and sensible) path is to launch a strong website first to generate leads and credibility, then build the internal tool or customer-facing app once there's a specific, proven workflow that needs it — a booking system, a client portal, a dashboard. Building the app before you've validated the need is usually the more expensive mistake.

We build both — see our Website Design and Custom Software Development services — but we'll tell you honestly which one to start with. Tell us what you're trying to do and we'll help you figure out which one actually fits.
